Short flights, long days: how to island hop gently.

Island Hopping Without the Stress

Flights between the main Hawaiian islands are short, but an island change still takes most of a day: check-out, a drive to the airport, security, the flight, baggage and a new rental car. For mature travelers, the best plan is usually one or two islands, with each move scheduled for a relaxed day.

PairingWhy it works
Oahu + MauiThe most flights, the easiest combination, and a good contrast of city and resort.
Oahu + Hawaii IslandCity and museums, then volcanoes and the Kohala Coast.
Maui + Hawaii IslandTwo resort areas and two national parks; plan altitude days carefully.
Any island + Lanai or MolokaiFor quiet; check flight and ferry status and medical services first.

Making Each Flight Easy

  • Book mid-morning flights rather than dawn departures.
  • Request wheelchair or boarding assistance when you book, and confirm it.
  • Small planes to Molokai and Lanai may board by stairs and have tight bag limits; ask in advance.
  • Keep medicines and essentials in a small bag that stays with you.
  • Pick up and return rental cars at the airport to save transfers.

A Gentle Island-Change Day

Treat each island change as a travel day and nothing more. Have a late breakfast, check out at the normal time, and choose a flight that lands in the early afternoon so you can collect the car, check in and rest before dinner. Pre-book the first evening’s meal near the new hotel. Keep a small bag with medicines, a change of clothes, a swimsuit and chargers so the large suitcase can wait if you are tired.

Cruising vs Flying Between Islands

An inter-island cruise means unpacking once and waking up on a new island, which appeals to many older travelers. The trade-off is less time on each island. If that sounds right, Hawaii Cruise explains how a cruise compares with a land trip, and Golden Cruises and Leisure Cruise Groups cover cruising for seniors. On land, compare flights on Airfares for Less.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a ferry between the Hawaiian islands?

Not between most islands. Flying is the normal way to island hop; flights between the main islands are short. Service to Lanai and Molokai is limited, so check current options before you plan.

How many islands should seniors visit?

One or two for most trips. Each island change costs most of a day in packing, transfers and airports, so fewer moves mean more time to enjoy where you are.
